2. Do I have to volunteer every week?

No.

Some sessions run monthly, others weekly and others fortnightly. Volunteers are not expected to be at every session, but they are expected to be able to attend regularly. One-on-one roles can be done on a weekly or fortnightly basis and are arranged according to the schedules of the volunteer and service user. Other roles are only needed occasionally.

3. Do I need any experience to volunteer?

No.

If you have experience in working with children or vulnerable adults or teaching English, this will be useful but is not essential by any means. You will receive any training necessary for your volunteer role by a RAY staff person.

4. What skills will I need?

In order to work with children you will need to have a valid Enhanced DBS Certificate, but this is something you can apply for through RAY, at no cost to you. Any experience in working with children or teaching English would be useful but we welcome volunteers of all levels of experience and ability. All volunteers must familiarise themselves with RAY’s policies and watch a Safeguarding Training, lasting about an hour and 20 minutes.

5. What support will I get?

You will attend an initial meeting to introduce you to RAY and give you the opportunity to speak with a Volunteer Coordinator about which volunteering role/s would be most suitable for you.

We hold regular volunteer meetings where we communicate news, policy changes and updates to volunteers and receive feedback from them.

Training sessions are held periodically to offer support and further development.

6. Will I need an interview?

No.

Following your introduction session, and on receipt of two satisfactory references from people who have worked with you or know you well, we will discuss with you whether you are ready to start volunteering, in what role/s, and any training you may need.

7. How will volunteering help me?

Refugee Action York has a real sense of community, which has been built up over years of dedication by volunteers. This alone is a great reason to get involved and is something you can be a part of. Volunteering looks great on anyone's CV and this is a thoroughly rewarding way to offer your time. Working with children, offering information and support or teaching English to adults can also get you some valuable firsthand experience, which can help you get onto courses and into various related workplaces.
