Refugee Action York (RAY) was founded in 2002 to raise awareness of the contribution refugees and asylum seekers make to our society and to challenge myths and misconceptions about refugees and asylum seekers.
RAY holds a regular Sunday afternoon Drop-In during school term time at Clifton Children’s Centre in Rawcliffe aimed primarily but not exclusively at supporting Turkish speaking families. The Drop-In is run almost entirely by volunteers, except for two paid Coordinators.
Aims of the Drop-In
To provide English and Turkish language classes for Kurdish and Turkish families in York (Refugee, Asylum Seeker or Migrant)
Turkish classes for children
English conversation classes for adults
Activities & games for children
Homework support
To help build a support network for Kurdish and Turkish families in York – from others within their own community, and also from the wider community
To increase this sense of community by sharing a meal together
To provide signposting for services and help that families may need or be entitled to
To facilitate presentations/talks and discussions for the Kurdish and Turkish communities on relevant topics

What to expect for your children at the Drop-In
We will provide a safe, caring, fun environment, where the children can learn Turkish, and enjoy games and activities.
Sometimes we would like to take photographs of the children in their classes or activities, to help with publicity and funding for the Drop-In. If you are NOT happy for your child’s photo to be taken at any time, please let us know.
If you would like to volunteer we would be grateful if you would make initial contact via email to info@refugeeactionyork with a brief note of your skills, interests and experience and our coordinator will then get in touch at the earliest opportunity (usually within a week).
It you are interested in attending the drop-in please get in touch by email to info@refugeeactionyork if you can, but if not we also welcome first time visitors in person – though we may not be able to arrange a class or help straight away.
